Description

Lede: Using a watercolor portrait of a woman from 1940 as a jumping off point, students delve into the history of social services provided for women through the Sophia Little Home.

In this episode, students from Rhode Island College Professor Amy Barlow’s FYS 100 class discuss a watercolor painting by Caroline DiOrio, found in the Clare Gomnes Letters to Caroline DiOrio in Special Collections. The Sophia Little Home, where Clare Gomnes worked as Superintendent, helped single mothers during and after pregnancy. DiOrio's painting serves as a launching pad for a broader discussion on social work, particularly concerning women and childbirth in the mid-20th century, and its connection to contemporary social work practices.
