Original abstract (1976): Mr. Carvalho came to East Providence to live with his sister ten years ago at the age of thirty. He was an office worker on the mainland but he was born in the Azores. He was relatively happy in Portugal and left in the hopes of improving his family's lot. For years relatives in America had been urging him to come to America; ten years later he is not sure he made the right move. He has a good job but complained about the lack of a sense of community in America. The strength of this interview was Mr. Carvalho's clear description of the differences in his lifestyles in Portugal and America. He also openly talked about inter-generational problems, informal Portuguese recreational groups that he belongs to, his pride in being Portuguese and his longing for old world customs.
This interview with Paolo Carvalho, an immigrant from Portugal, was conducted on June 14, 1976. The interview discusses reasons for immigration, a comparison of life in Portugal with life in the United States, his childhood and family, work, and his desire to return to Portugal. In addition to the audio recording of the interview, there is a typed summary and abstract.
