Original abstract (1976): Mr. Amaro came from a moderately successful farming family on the mainland of Portugal. He beautifully described the size, appearance, economy and social structure of his small village. He talked about the role of religion in the life of the farmers and dwelt at length on a profound sense of "belonging", as he put 1t, in the society and culture of his village. Mr. Amaro became an elementary school teacher, was drafted into the army and decided to come to America ten years ago at the age of twenty-five t o work and save money bring back to Portugal. His girlfriend and future wife was already living in Cumberland with relatives. Mr. Amaro married in Portugal and came to Rhode Island to live with his wife's relatives. He worked in factories, went to college and is now director of bilingual programs in Central Falls.' He talked about generational conflicts and village associations within the Portuguese community today. He discussed the importance of the Lusitanian Club of which he is an officer. He also discussed the role of the Blackstone Valley Immigrant Aid Society of which he is a member. A number of other significant issues were covered.
