Hospitals across the country face growing challenges related to capacity constraints, inefficient patient throughput, and prolonged emergency department (ED) boarding, all of which negatively impact patient outcomes and institutional performance. This project addresses these issues through the creation and implementation of a Nurse Bed Manager role. This is an innovative, nurse-led position designed to improve hospital flow and reduce inefficiencies in real time. This project follows a structured 6-month timeline that includes a needs assessment, role development, pilot implementation, and post-intervention analysis. The project offers a minimal-cost, high-impact intervention with anticipated outcomes to improve patient satisfaction, increased communication among hospital units, decreased morbidity and mortality among ED boarders, increased hospital revenue and overall improved hospital efficiency seen through key metrics. Key metrics such as ED boarding time, time to bed assignment, length of stay, discharge efficiency, and patient satisfaction are tracked to evaluate the role’s impact. The Nurse Bed Manager role offers a replicable model that elevates nursing visibility in hospital operations and provides a strategic solution to one of healthcare’s most persistent systemic challenges.
