Non-adherence to drugs remains one of the top issues of positive patient outcomes as it relates to coronary artery disease (CAD), which results in hospitalization, disease advancement, and demise. This quality improvement project guided by evidence-based practice, sought to improve adherence to medication by instilling nurse-led educational intervention in the cardiac step-down unit of Charlton Memorial Hospital. It presents an intervention based on the theory of planned behavior, which includes a combination of the systematic education of the nurses, bilateral written materials per patient, and motivational interviewing methods. A clinical support brochure has also been prepared in which adherence behavior was reinforced during discharge. Nurses ' knowledge and confidence in adherence strategies were assessed through pre- and post-tests. The increase in knowledge and application of adherence support tools was no exception in the project. The created dissemination plans include the application of materials during staff orientation, installation of policy, and agreement with continuous quality improvement. Findings underline the immense possibilities of advanced practice nurses being theorist-practitioners in opening possibilities for the nursing staff to better comply with patients and better outcomes about patient health in dealing with CAD.
