Description

The ruins of Real do São Filpe Fort overlook the village Cidade Velha. Built in the 17th century to defend against attack from pirates and other invaders, it proved in adequate and after a devastating invasion in 1712 the city, Ribeiera Grande, was all but abandoned and the capital was moved to Praia.
