Description
Printed in France. Inscribed on reverse by artist: "tete en bois", "accepted by the Salon d'Automne", " '24", "For Dad", "head in wood, excepted [sic] by the salon d'Autumn [sic] for exposition in 1924", "N. E. Prophet". An accompanying duplicate is inscribed on reverse by the artist, " No 2", Elizabeth Prophet 147 rue Broca Paris 13e". This address was not inhabited by Prophet until the summer of 1926 (The Rhode Islander, 13). Enlarged duplicate images in collection are inscribed on reverse as: "Head of a Negro" and "Negro in wood" as well as, "School of Design", "Owned by Eleanor B Green", "Providence Rhode Island". In an undated diary entry, Prophet writes, "I cut the bust in wood and the following year it was accepted in the Salon d'Automne, 1924." (The Rhode Islander, 8-10) The Rhode Island School of Design this piece in its collection. It's creation is estimated to be 'before 1927'.
