Description

A farm in Lazareto, a small village about 4 km to the east of Mindelo on São Vicente. Lazareto is a small but growing village with a small population of middle class families and houses which has grown since the mid twentieth century. This photograph shows a wind mill and irrigation, which is a necessity in Cape Verde where the dry season is the majority of the year. On the horizon is the islet Ilhéi dos Pássaros, a volcanic seamount that marks the border between the Bay of Mindelo and the Atlantic Ocean.
