Villa da Ribeira Brava is the main town on São Nicolau. Located an the interior valley, it was settled in the early 16th. Settlers were attracted to the area by semi-permanent streams in the area that makes São Nicolau relatively supportive of agriculture, as compared to the other islands in the Cape Verde archipelago. Villa da Ribeira Brava is populated by brightly painted homes and is a popular tourist destination.
